How to Start an Artist Mail Club

A practical guide to your first hundred envelopes, from someone else's mistakes.

July 9, 2026 · 8 min read

Decide what arrives before you decide what it costs. A club is a promise about an envelope, and the envelope has to be repeatable twelve times without hating it.

Then price it honestly: materials, postage, packaging, and the hour it takes to pack. Most first-time clubs underprice postage by half.

Your first mailing should be small enough that you can pack it in one evening with a friend.

Cap your run. A subscriber limit is not scarcity marketing — it's a guarantee you can keep the promise.

Finally, publish your schedule and stick to it. Collectors forgive a plain envelope; they don't forgive silence.
